The Upside to Downlights: Save Energy, Time, and Money with LEDs.
Increasing numbers of Australian households and businesses are turning to LED lamps and fittings (LEDs) as an efficient and aesthetically superior alternative to traditional incandescent and halogen lamps. According to Australia’s peak lighting industry body Lighting Council Australia the average annual operating cost per household for a good quality 7 watt LED downlight is only $3.43, compared to $18.75 for a 50 watt halogen lamp, and $16.79 for a 35 watt halogen lamp.
“LEDs are comparable to the most efficient technologies available and even though more expensive initially will save money and time over their lifetime as they have a long lifetime, use very little energy and do not require regular replacement like halogen lamps,” the LCA states.
“LEDs produce similar light output to traditional incandescent and halogen lamps and use much less energy. Incandescent and halogen lamps waste most of the energy they use as heat when they produce light.”
Brilliant’s new UMBRA Colour Temperature Changing LED Downlight is the ideal replacement for existing halogen and fluorescent downlights. The Umbra provides a wide angled diffused beam and has three adjustable colour settings: warm white, cool white, and daylight. With a three year warranty and a lifespan of up to 30,000 hours, Umbra LEDs provide a superior quality of light while also helping to reduce your energy usage and carbon footprint. As well as being better for the environment and saving you money on your power bill, LED downlights are also at the forefront of smart technology for the home.
The Spectrum Smart RGB LED Downlight is at the cutting-edge of smart lighting technology and can transform your living room into a dance floor with a few taps of your smartphone. Spectrum allows you to not only turn up to five downlights on and off via your smartphone, but to adjust your downlights to suit your mood and activity, with 16 million colours to choose from. You can and even sync the colour changes to music.
In Australia, the initial cost of installing LED downlights in your home or business can be offset by state government initiatives in NSW, Victoria, and SA. These schemes encourage consumers to make the switch to cleaner, greener LED lighting by providing discounts on approved products from participating businesses such as Brilliant Lighting. The Essential Services Commission (ESC), the government body responsible for the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (VEET), states that “simply changing the light globes in your home or business can save you up to $19 per globe per year off your power bill.”
“This is an easy and cheap way to save energy and reduce your greenhouse emissions,” the ESC states.
